I am starting this Blog to help The Journey Church in Rochester, NH with any potential questions they may have about diet, exercise or general health. Even though this is intended to be for The Journy Church, it is completely open for discussion from anyone with an interest. Feel free to ask any question whatsoever. Some examples of questions I am often asked as a trainer include:
- How often should I exercise?
- What is more important cardiovascular exercsie or resistance training?
- What supplements should I use?
- If I wanted to lose 20lbs what would be the best way to start doing that?
If these are some of your questions, please let me know and I can address them. Of course, do not feel limited to these questions alone, I will try to help in any way that I can. However, as a reminder, I am not a physician and I do not prescribe exercise, diet or supplementation as a way to handle a medical condition. If you have questions about your medical status and how exercise, diet or supplements may help you, please consult with your doctor first. Thank you.

Very cool!
ReplyDeleteHi Jon,
ReplyDeleteWhat would be the best way for a 55 year old out of shape woman like me to get some cardio and strengthening exercises (perhaps using the Wii even)? My knees seem to be one of my problems for many years since I have chondromalacia. The Wii running and jumping games are challenging on my knees! I do Yoga stretches daily, so my flexibility is pretty good. I really want to lose weight and treat my body as a temple of The Lord!
Thank you so much for your servant's heart in giving this way. What an encouragement!
In His Grip...Rejoicing with You,
Diane
Hi Diane,
ReplyDeleteJoints definitely have a tendency to deteriorate over time. However, that shouldn't discourage you from doing what you can do. Walking even at a fast pace can still burn a decent amount of calories and help start the weight loss process. In fact, if you were to wear a pedometer, and track how many steps you take in a day, that can give you more feedback on how many calories you burnt. A good goal to shoot for (this sounds like a big number) is 10,000 steps each day. That is roughly equivalent to about 5 miles, which for many people is about 500 calories burnt. Doing that consistently (like over the course of 1 month) can really help with weight loss.
Another consideration may be if you have a gym membership to start with some light weight training to help develop strength around your weaker joints. Doing some leg pressing exercises can really help develop your quadricep muscles which can help increase function and mobility of your legs and take pressure off of your knees over time. If you don't have a gym membership, consider some light calisthenics such as 1/2 squats against a wall: Squatting down about a foot and standing back up. See how your knees feel with those exercises and try to progress to a more challenging range of motion.
Thank you so much Jon. I definitely will give your suggestions a try at home and see how I progress. God bless you as you serve Him through serving others in getting fit.
